Which Best Essential Oils Help with Hair Regrowth and Hair Loss?
The best essential oils to help with hair loss and hair regrowth are: lavender, peppermint, rosemary, cedarwood, lemongrass, thyme, clary sage, tea tree, ylang ylang and horsetail plant oil.
Thyme Oil (Thymus Vulgaris)
Thyme oil reduces inflammation in hair follicles, stimulates the scalp to improve hair growth, and can prevent further hair loss. You can place 2 drops in 2 tablespoons of a carrier oil before applying it to your scalp. Next you can leave it on your scalp for around 10 minutes where it can then be washed out. Thyme is an anti-inflammatory that helps to slow down hair loss and helps hair to grow.
Cedarwood Oil (Cedrus Atlantica)
Cedarwood essential oil helps to regulate the oil producing glands (sebum secretion) in the scalp so there is more of a balance, and cedarwood has been seen to promote hair growth and reduce hair loss. Too much sebum can be mean a higher than normal amount of dihydrotestosterone. Cedarwood mixed with lavender and rosemary in certain quantities has also been found to reduce hair loss.
Cedarwood can also act to treat antifungal and antibacterial conditions. These types of conditions in the scalp have been shown to contribute to hair loss and dandruff.
Mix a couple of drops of cedarwood with 2 tablespoons of a carrier oil, then massage it into the scalp. After 10 minutes everything should be washed out of the hair.
Ylang Ylang Oil (Cananga Odorata)
Ylang Ylang can be used to regulate the balance of oils. It also supports healthy hair growth, and can be used for a dry scalp to stimulate sebum production. When there is insufficient sebum and oil in the scalp, the hair can become dry.
You can mix 5 drops of ylang ylang with 2 tablespoons of warm carrier oil. This can then be massaged into the scalp then a warm towel can be wrapped around the head for half an hour. After that the hair can be washed normally.
Peppermint Oil (Mentha Piperita)
Peppermint essential oil can increase the depth and the number of hair follicles. When the hair is at the growing phase of hair growth, and when Peppermint oil is applied to the scalp, circulation to the treated area can increase. A tingling, cold sensation on the scalp is often experienced as circulation improves.
Peppermint oil has approximately 40% menthol. Menthol has been known to improve the circulation of blood in the scalp. Menthol’s effectiveness has been positively compared to minoxidil.
Lemon Oil (Citrus Limonum)
Lemon essential oil is extracted from the peel of lemons. It can be diluted and applied to the skin.
There are various benefits of using lemon essential oil for the hair and scalp. With its antioxidant properties, Lemon oil can help to revive and cleanse the hair follicles.
Rosemary Oil (Rosmarinus Officinalis)
Rosemary oil can improve cell regeneration as well as hair growth and thickness.Androgenic hair loss and thinning hair is caused by Dihydrotestosterone, and rosemary oil reduces this in the hair follicles.
Twice a week, you can mix a few drops of rosemary oil with coconut oil or olive oil, then apply this to the scalp. After leaving it on for around 10 minutes, you can wash it out using your usual shampoo and conditioner.
Lavender Oil
Lavender oil helps to improve the general health of the scalp and generates growth of cells to speed up hair growth.
Three times a week, you can mix a few drops of lavender oil into three tablespoons of carrier oil (for example coconut oil or olive oil), then apply it to the scalp. After around 10 minutes you can wash it out using your usual shampoo and conditioner.
Lemongrass Oil

Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil can help to promote a healthy hair growth cycle; it unplugs hair follicles and stimulates blood flow so the roots of the hair can be more nourished.
Dilute tea tree oil with carrier oils such as coconut or castor oil to experience best results. Many anti dandruff treatment products used today contain tea tree oil.
For daily use, you can add ten drops of tea tree oil with shampoo or your conditioner. Alternatively, add 3 drops of tea tree oil with 2 tablespoons of a carrier oil, massage it into the scalp, and after 15 minutes wash it out.
Horsetail Plant Extract Oil
Horsetail plant extract oil is an extract oil not an essential oil but it deserves to be listed here. It contains the vitamin known as silica and silica is known to reduce dandruff, improve hair strength, and improve the speed of hair growth.
Horsetail plant oil can be taken orally or it can be mixed with a carrier oil and applied to the scalp to improve thinning hair. This oil can also be mixed with shampoo.
